Everybody knows that olive oil is healthy, but there are several misconceptions when it comes to cooking with olive oil.
While using uncooked olive oil is the best choice because it retains its nutritional value particularly its antioxidant activity, cooking with olive oil is fine too.
Many people believe that olive oil is not a good oil to fry with. Well, frying in general is not the healthiest choice no matter what oil you use, however if you do fry or sauté, olive oil may be your best bet.
You may have read that olive oil has a lower smoke point than other oils. However, it is rare that someone sautéing or even deep-frying at home will ever reach the smoke point of olive oil. In fact, a recent study even showed that individuals who ate fried foods, did not suffer negative health consequences as long as that food was fried in olive oil and they followed a Mediterranean style diet.
So there you have it, olive oil; a versatile ingredient for all your cooking needs.
